Medicare
What is Medicare?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States that primarily serves:
- Individuals 65 and older
- Younger people with certain disabilities
- People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)
Medicare is divided into four parts, each covering different services:
Part A – Hospital Insurance
- Helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A.
Part B – Medical Insurance
- Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, medical equipment, and some home health care. There is a monthly premium for Part B.
Part C – Medicare Advantage
- Offered by private companies approved by Medicare, these plans include everything covered under Parts A and B, and often include additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.
Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage
- Helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Plans are offered by private insurers and vary in cost and coverage.
